Very Random Thoughts A Discussion on Games 2

talonsandrew under Very Random Thoughts and tagged: classroom. WoW I don't understand how you manage to separate WoW and other games such as Bioshock and Mass effect! If anything! I would say they have less of a purpose in school than WoW does, Bioshock is a single player game! At least CoD you can have the options of multiplayer games, In WoW there are multiple ways to play, it's not always a deathmatch, Other versions such as Search-and-Destroy. or Sabotage, which requires you to formulate strategies with your teammates, Plus, many of the games that you mentioned are shoot-em-up games. You neglect to mention other genres. like sports games! I would argue that games such as NHL 11 requires just as much strategy as CoD does, There are people out there who will never be good enough at hockey to play in the NHL! This doesn't stop them from experiencing it though! For example. in the Be A Pro game mode! people can experience failures, and having start off as an inferior person. and slowly work your way up to stardom! much like in the real world. I would argue that people benefit from this experience! because once they get an actual job, they won't become frustrated, And hey! just like in the real world! upgrades can be purchased for exorbitant sums of money. (see BC Rail deal)! Other games such as NHL also provide other benefits! One of the biggest things that governments are promoting nowadays, is activeness! Wouldn't you agree that if someone falls in love with a sport through a videogame. it will inspire them to start trying to improve at it in real life? I know that people make the argument about just sitting on a couch all day. but I for one know that after I play video games. going out on my driveway and trying moves I just executed in a game is always something I do. The final point I have to make is about strategies! We learn about strategies everywhere, Math strategies, word problem strategies. strategies for learning, strategies for studying, and for some people, strategies for cheating. Simply playing games where you are forced to create a strategy requires your mind to analyze all the different facets and possible outcomes of the game. and mentally sharpens it. I know many people who argue against video games have a lot of points to back it up. but lets look at demographics, I defy you to point out a teenager who doesn't want video games in the classroom, And I would argue that many of the people who advocate for a traditional style of learning, sans video games! are all of an older generation. They have no clue of the sheer amount of brainpower playing video games requires. They grew up in an age of Pacman! and Mario. There's no strategy to either. You run around! jump over green blocks! and try not to get eaten. Nowadays! there are so many choices you have to make, so much to do, that it requires many different types of thinking! And this is something older people refuse to accept! We say that we are on a steep curve of advancement, Most of the technological advancements have come in the last 10 years. So teachers should be advocating for more of this, not trying to ignore it and pretend that it doesn't exist. That my thoughts, What do you think? Comments.
